Pakistans new regime have looked to improve the sides fitness and discipline ahead of their tour of England, writes Sajid Sadiq of Pak. Wholesale NFL Jerseys .Passion.net .... Pakistans painful memories of the 2010 tour of England, which resulted in humiliation on many fronts was partially erased by the Test whitewash of England in the UAE four years ago and further eased by victory in the autumn series last year. But Pakistan know that a determined England lies in wait to avenge those defeats. Sri Lanka are the current recipients of Englands home-turf power - James Anderson and Stuart Broad mauling the visitors at will. James Anderson has taken 18 wickets over the first two Tests against Sri Lanka this summer Its the most serious test of Pakistans credentials as a Test playing nation and an opportunity to prove to the world that their successes in the UAE are not simply a product of local conditions alone. In preparation, recently the Pakistan squad have been running around an army boot camp in Abbottabad, indulging in military-style endurance training usually reserved for men in combat clothing and camouflaged faces.News relating to failures of many players to keep pace with their military fitness instructors made interesting headlines in local and international papers, especially given that mental images of unfit cricketers wilting under pressure would seem a quintessentially Pakistani issue. Amir receives UK visa Pakistan seamer free to travel to England The fitness camp was met with a few hearty objections by former Pakistan players including Javed Miandad who described it as a waste of time and potentially even dangerous, but not for the modern-thinking ways of the current Pakistan management.Former Pakistani great Inzamam-ul-Haq was lured back as Chief Selector by the Pakistan Cricket Board, and though it might surprise some in the English camp, under Inzamams watchful gaze, a new and more determined Pakistan team is literally taking shape. The appointment, coupled with the expertise of Pakistans new Head Coach, Mickey Arthur, could bring untold benefits and Inzi has wasted no time in putting together a list of initial steps and requirements. Former South Africa and Australia head coach Mickey Arthur has recently joined the Pakistan set up Perhaps recalling the hardships of previous Pakistan players to English conditions, hes forced the PCB to organize a two-week preparatory camp for the squad in Hampshire.Inzamam also knows about the frailties of the Pakistan batsmen against the moving ball in English conditions. The Duke cricket ball used by England for home series is a well-known irritant for visiting teams, Australia falling prey last year and Sri Lankas current batting collapses a further reminder of what Pakistan could face in a few weeks.Pakistan are already using the Duke ball in practice sessions in Lahore and the PCB has ordered the creation of green top wickets in Lahore in order to create conditions as close to those which could be encountered in England. Pakistan have been preparing with Duke Balls ahead of their trip to England The unfortunate historical truth remains that few Pakistan tours of England have been short of controversy, with the spot-fixing scandal of the summer of 2010 being the last and most notorious example.Whilst a recurrence of another controversy due to unforeseen circumstance can never be discounted, it would appear that Inzamam has taken ample steps to ensure that the team remains free of any potential hotspots. Mohammad Amir played during Pakistans last tour of England in 2010 before serving a five-year spot-fixing ban His bold decision to leave out Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal from the tour on disciplinary grounds can only be applauded, as can his efforts to make sure Mohammad Amir remains focused on cricket as he makes his much talked-about return to Test cricket in the same country where he last played a Test before being banned for five years. If the pundits are to be believed, the odds of Pakistan escaping unblemished from the upcoming tour of England are pretty grim but unlike past visits to England, this Pakistan squad and its management seem determined to give a good account of themselves.Watch Pakistans tour of England live on Sky Sports, starting with the first Test at Lords from Thursday, July 14. MONTREAL - Impact president Joey Saputo couldnt wait until the end of the game before he stirred the pot. Ozzie Smith Jersey Large . Minutes before the final whistle of Sporting Kansas Citys 3-0 victory over a shorthanded Montreal Impact squad on Saturday afternoon, Saputo tweeted: "Our fans deserve better. Changes will be coming, guaranteed." The Impact (1-3-5) have won once this season, are second-to-last in the Eastern Conference with six points from nine games, and have now lost six games in all competitions. "In the end, Im the coach, and its my responsibility," said Frank Klopas, who coached his 100th MLS game on Saturday. "I always want the best for the club. Every one has the right to be upset when you lose. Im going to give everything in the end. "I know Im doing the right things, but in the end, Im the coach and Im responsible. It starts from there, from the top." The Impact, who were without the services of Marco Di Vaio due to a hamstring injury, were outclassed even before Collen Warner was shown a red card for handling the ball with his arm in the penalty box in the 17th minute, which left the club with only 10 players on the field. Before and after the ejection, Montreal was penned in its own half. Kansas City (5-2-2) finished the game with 78 per cent ball possession, and 12 total shots to Montreals four. Sporting also completed five times as many passes as the Impact did. Fans expressed their displeasure by booing sporadically during the game. The Ultras, Montreals vocal fan base, even chanted for the return of Marco Schallibaum, last years coach. "I know the frustration of the fans, and its understandable," said Klopas. "They come to support the team." "Thats why theyre fans," added Impact keeper Troy Perkins. "They want results, they want a good team, and especially in this city, they want to win. Theyre free to say what they want, and theyre going to say it." In the 17th minute, Matt Beslers long throw-in evaded the Impact defenders and landed awkwardly in the penalty box. Perkins made the initial save, but the ball rolled onto the arm of Warner, who was sprawled out on the goal-line. Warner made two saves with his left arm before the referee pointed to the spot. "Those long throws, weve been talking about them. We knew they were good at them," said 24-year-old Wandrille Lefevre, who made his first appearance for the team on Saturday. "We had to be ready, and we paid for those details. And that wasnt the last goal — it was the first one. Its all about the details. The games are won and lost in a matter of minutes." After the red card, Dom Dwyers penalty kick beat Perkins low for his team-leading fifth goal of the season. "Initially, the ball just happened to be on his hand," said Sporting midfielder Graham Zusi. "But the second one was pretty obvious. "It changed everything. We were able to keep the ball the entire game. They didnt have anything going for them. Going down a man is devastating, and today was no different." Dwyer added another in the second half, a powerful left-footed shot in the 64th minute, to cement Kansas lead and propel the team to the top of the MLS Eastern Conference. Paulo Nagamura also scored for Kansas City in the first half. The storyline wasnt very different from last months encounter between these two teams, when Dwyer recorded a brace and Kansas City thumped the Impact 4-0 at Sporting Park on Apr. 19. Sporting keeper Eric Kronberg, who was only solicited twice, now leads the league with five shutouts and a paltry 0.67 goals-against-average. Klopas wanted to focus on positives after the game, pointing to a young back-line that was solid despite the lopsided score. Alongside Lefevre, the Impact started 22-year-old Maxim Tissot and 21-year-old Karl Ouimette on defence. "These are three younger guys that are getting a lot of experience," said Klopas. "Theyre guys you can count on for the future. Im not happy with the result, but you can have continuity when you can build a team around guys like that." The Impact play Edmonton FC midweek in the Canadian Championship after losing the first leg 2-1. The team then heads to the American capital to take on D.C. United. "Theres a lack of ideas, a lack of belief in themselves. Certainly somethings missing," said Perkins. "But when things are going bad, you dont stop, you dont quit, you just keep going. We have to keep plugging away, and keep doing what were doing." Westbrook had 27 points, 16 assists and 10 rebounds. His assist total tied the franchise record for a playoff game set in 1987 by Nate McMillan when the team was still in Seattle. The gritty Grizzlies, playing without leading scorer Zach Randolph because of a suspension, led by 11 points in the first half before the Thunder overwhelmed them and shot 66 per cent after the break. Marc Gasol led Memphis with 24 points. Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley had 20 points and nine assists while playing with a strained right hamstring. It was Westbrooks second triple-double in the past three games. He made 10 of 16 shots from the field, both of his 3-pointers and five of his six free throws. Durant, slowed for much of the series, looked like his normal self. The regular-season scoring champion made 12 of 18 field goals and all five of his 3-pointers after struggling from long range throughout the series. Guards Tony Allen and Mike Miller started for the first time in the series in place of Randolph and Tayshaun Prince, and the Grizzlies beat the Thunder at their fast-paced game in the first quarter. Gasol scored 15 points in the first half, but he and Allen both had three fouls at the break. The Thunder opened the second half on a 10-2 run. Durant hit a 3-pointer to give Oklahoma City a 71-60 lead. Durant hit another 3 that gave Oklahoma City a 78-63 advantage and led to a Memphis timeout. Back-to-back 3s by Derek Fisher and Westbrook and a breakaway dunk by Caron Butler gave the Thunder a 92-76 lead, and Oklahoma City took a 94-81 edge into the fourth quarter. CINCINNATI, Ohio -- No champagne. Nick Bosa Super Bowl Jersey . No curtain call in front of joyous fans. No celebrating at all, really. The Cincinnati Reds clinched a playoff spot with hardly any notice. If anything, they were a little bummed out. Shin-Soo Choo drove in the winning run with a single off the wall in the 10th inning, and the Reds secured their third playoff spot in four years shortly after beating the New York Mets 3-2 on Monday night. They want a whole lot more than the wild card thats already in hand. "Were excited, obviously," shortstop Zack Cozart said, looking over a clubhouse where the only visible celebration was the image of Pittsburgh Pirates spraying each other on television. "Thats not our goal. Were in the division hunt. Were not happy with a wild card." The Reds clinched theirs after Choos drive smacked high off the wall in left-centre field. Eight minutes later, the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 4-3, clinching an NL wild card for Pittsburgh. Bummer. The Reds were pulling for first-place St. Louis to lose. Instead, the Cardinals retained their two-game lead over Cincinnati and Pittsburgh in the NL Central. "I was pulling for the Nationals to win, get a step closer to the Cardinals," manager Dusty Baker said. "Weve still got five games to go. A lot of baseball." The Reds kept pace with St. Louis despite squandering plenty of chances to end it early. They wasted a chance in the ninth, when David Aardsma pitched out of a bases-loaded threat by retiring Todd Frazier on a fly out. Greg Burke (0-3) gave up a one-out single to Devin Mesoraco in the 10th, and Derrick Robinson singled him to third. Choo followed with his third hit of the game, off left-hander Sean Henn, a drive high off the wall in left-centre. Choo headed for the dugout after crossing first base. Manny Parra (2-3) allowed one hit in the 10th. It was a notable win for the Reds -- their 90th of the season, the third time in the last four years that they have reached the mark under Baker. They havent had so many 90-win seasons since the Big Red Machine of the 1970s. Johnny Cueto made a second solid start since coming off the disabled list, an encouraging sign for Cincinnatis post-season plans. The right-hander has been sidelined three times by soreness near his shoulder. He gave up two runs -- one earned -- on Lucas Dudas sacrifice fly and solo homer, which snapped an 0-for-17 slump. In two starts, Cueto has allowed eight hits and one earned run in 12 innings. Cuetos 99-pitch outing was the most encouraging part of the night for the Reds, who could have their ace back for the playoffs. "He was excellent," Baker said. "Hes getting ready. Each time he goes out, he gets his endurance up." The Reds got two runs in six innings off Aaron Harang, who made his third start for the Mets. Choo singled home a run in the second and Joey Votto got one of his career-high five walks with the bases loaded. Harang is 3-0 in four career starts against the Reds, including a 4-2 victory with Seattle on July 5 at Great American Ball Park. The Mariners later released him with a 5-11 record. The Reds sustained their hopes of another division title by winning another long game -- they are 13-9 in extra innings. Last September, Baker was in a Chicago hospital getting treated for an irregular heartbeat and a mini-stroke when the Reds clinched the NL Central title. They made a video of their spray-away celebration and wished for another when he returned. It didnt happy. Cueto had to leave the opening game of the playoffs at San Francisco after only eight pitches because of a strained muscle in his right side. With their rotation in flux, the Reds lost the five-game series. This season, the Reds have stayed in contention despite losing Cueto, setup relievers Sean Marshall and Jonathan Broxton, and cleanup hitter Ryan Ludwick for most of the season. Ludwick tore cartilage in his right shoulder while sliding into a base on opening day and was out for more than three months. They were six games out on Aug. 9, in danger of falling out of the divisions three-team race. They regrouped and have taken the race down to the final week by winning 12 of their last 17. NOTES: New Yorks David Wright had his hitting streak ended at eight games. ... Billy Hamilton got in as a pinch-runner in the eighth and stole second, leaving him 13 for 13 in attempts. The five walks also tied a club record. ... RHP Mike Leake (14-6) starts for the Reds on Tuesday against LHP Jonathon Niese (7-8). Jerry Rice Super Bowl Jersey . Evans was a favourite of fans but not coach Jason Kidd, who used him in just 30 of their 51 games.Im not sure when I feel worse for the coaches I know. When they get fired, and take temp gigs on our TSN panel. Or when they get re-hired, and start peeling more years off their lives with the relentless stress and scrutiny of an NHL head-coaching job. I saw it in Paul Maurices eyes as he stood at the podium Monday in Winnipeg, answering a question about accountability on his team. Maurice is one of the best men Ive met in hockey, and might be the single most polished media presence there is in the NHL coaching ranks. But as that question was asked, he swallowed hard, the veins bulged a little in his neck, and he answered, I could f----- make you cry in that room. You could see him catch himself after he said it, and moments later he would apologize for the profanity. But he meant it. It was raw, real, and...understandable from a coach of a struggling team, whose collective character was being called into question. Mos blue moment spoke volumes. No matter how cool and composed you are, coaching in the NHL in 2014 can make you lose your f----- mind.* (*I wrote flippin Mom. Promise. The editors just dashed it for effect.) We used to get 20 games before we had to deal with the real pressure, but now these guys are feeling it three or four games in, says longtime NHL coach Marc Crawford, who is currently coaching in Zurich in the Swiss-A League. I think its because of the increased intensity of the coverage, especially in Canadian markets, and the parity in the league. A week into the season and if you arent doing well, everything gets questioned — coaching, goaltending, captaincy. Ive faced a lot of scrutiny in my time, but Ive never seen it at this level. On the second day of training camp, Toronto Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle was asked if he thought Phil Kessel hated him. Before his team had played a single pre-season game, he was listed as the Vegas odds-on favourite to be the first NHL coach fired. People speculate endlessly about Mike Babcock coming to Toronto next year like there is already a vacancy. You feel like Carlyle should be over in the corner jumping up and down waving his arms yelling, Hello!?! Over here! Still the Leafs coach! Just sayin! Ive come to expect the unexpected in this market, Carlyle told me back at training camp. The most trivial things somehow become stories. It bothers me that my friends are upset by it, that my family gets upset. He maintains he doesnt get upset. I dont believe him. When you guys are ranking the top five coaches on the hot seat before the season starts, I think its just the stupidest thing in the world, says Crawford. Where else in society do we do this? Do we list the top five teachers to be fired, the top five executives? NHL coaches get paid very well and no one is going to feel sympathy for us, but lists like the ones you do are ridiculous. Err...Well this is awkward. That weird section of the column where you use a Marc Crawford quote saying youre part of the problem that youre writing about. I suddenly feel like Leo DiCaprio when he realizes hes the insane killer at the end of Shutter Island. Oopsie. Crows right. The panel, The Quiz, Sportscentre — its all part of this Godzilla of scrutiny the coaches have to deal with when theyd rather just be playing with their whiteboards, designing new breakouts. Crows also right when he says they wont get sympathy from most. As toough as the gig has become, Crawford and every other ex-NHL coach would kill to get back in the league, and be stuck in the middle of this media mayhem again. Kendrick Bourne Super Bowl Jersey. Such is the drug. But I do feel for them. Mostly because Ive seen what theyre like when they arent coaching: relaxed, stress-free, excited as kids at a birthday party when their pizza arrives at intermission. By my count, weve had a full rosters worth of ex-NHL coaches on our panel over the years — Maurice (twice), Crawford (twice), Ron Wilson, Mike Babcock, Peter Laviolette, Tom Renney, John Anderson, Craig MacTavish, Andy Murray, Bobby Francis, John Tortorella, Mike Keenan, Joel Quenneville and Claude Julien (both for just one Tradecentre appearance), Kevin Constantine, Mike Milbury, and Pierre McGuire. Only McGuire and Milbury were content being full-time broadcasters. The rest were between jobs, and the panel is a decent place to watch a lot of hockey, and maybe keep your name fresh on the mind of the next general manager who decides a change of direction is needed. I still get asked all the time, What is (insert coach/panelist here) really like? The answer is almost always the same: Really nice guy. In other words, not at all like the guy you see ripping the reporter in the post-game scrum, trying to climb over the partition to get at the opposing coach, or grabbing certain body parts (that have to be pixeled out on Sportscentre) to make his feelings clear to an official. General television/life rule: when we have to pixel out your junk, youve had a bad day. I get asked about Tortorella more than anyone else. He is the poster boy for how opposite a personality a man can have when he isnt in front of the microphones every night defending his power play. When he was at TSN, Torts was church-boy polite. Shy almost. He would struggle not to doze off during the double-headers because his usual bedtime is 9pm. Our top-ten lists show the one or two short clips when he got angry on the panel, ripping Sean Avery and The Quiz. The endless replays of those brief soundbites warp everyones memory of the five months Torts spent with us. Reality is, he was mostly calm and quiet (to a fault for television), and said almost nothing controversial. Then he got the back behind the bench in New York, and later Vancouver, and...well we all watched it. I checked in on Torts this week. He sounds happy (if you can actually sound something in a few texts), spending most of his time keeping up with the careers of his two grown children, and working with his wife on animal welfare causes (they have a house full of rescued dogs). I tried to ask a couple of hockey questions, but he chose not to answer, opting instead to just ask about my kids...and dogs. Wounds still too fresh, I assume. Peter Laviolette is another of my ex-panelist favourites - smart as a whip with a dry sense of humour. Hes off to a great start in Nashville and will likely be there a long time. But Lavy is also acutely aware of the tenuous position of the NHL head coach - always just one long losing streak away from...another potential panel temp job. I reached him the other night, looking for some insight on Filip Forsberg, the young Swede who is off to a great start with the Predators. He gave me a couple of quotes about what a good young player Forsberg is, then began the following text exchange: ' ' '
MONTREAL - The gloom of starting the season with three straight defeats hasnt descended on the Montreal Impact just yet. Fred Warner Super Bowl Jersey . The players and their new, as-yet winless coach Frank Klopas, were upbeat this week as they prepared to face the Union on Saturday in Philadelphia. "The effort and intensity have been very good," said Klopas. "Everybodys shown theyre ready to play. Those setbacks will go away if we keep working like we have been." There is reason for optimism, starting with the return of star forward Marco Di Vaio and midfielder Andres Romero from the three-game suspensions they incurred from a scuffle at the end of their playoff game in October in Houston. The 38-year-old Di Vaio, a 20-goal scorer last season, may help them end a goalless string that has reached 205 minutes after being shut out in their last two matches. "Hes a competitive person, but its for the right reasons — for the group," Klopas said of Di Vaio. "His ability to create, and wanting ball in difficult moments, and to score goals... dont mean anything to him unless it helps the team win." Di Vaio is likely to step in for Andrew Wenger, who had a goal in a season-opening 3-2 loss in Dallas while filling in as the lone forward. It was not clear if Romero would start in his usual left midfield position or be available off the bench. There were also reports this week that the club is close to signing a third designated player to go with the Italian Di Vaio and Argentine midfielder Hernan Bernarello. Ignacio Piatti, an attacking midfielder who usually plays on the left wing, is believed ready to ink a deal that would see him join the Impact in June from the San Lorenzo club in Argentina. The team that opened camp with no significant signings, despite a late season plummet from first to fifth place last season, looks ready to make some changes. They also added fullback Heath Pearce during camp. A former Major League Soccer all-star with the New York Red Bulls who is coming off hip surgery, Pearce saw his first game action off the bench in a 2-0 loss at home last week to the Seattle Sounders. "I feel healthy and fit," the 29-year-old Pearce said. "Its been a long process. I feel young again." It was uncertain if he will start at left back, where the teams first round pick in this years draft, Eric Miller, has been impressive. Pearce likes how the Impact have not hung their heads despite the losses. The team started the 2013 campaign with four straight wins. "I dont think theres cause for alarm right now based on our results," he said. "Ive been in situations before where seasons didnt start well and Ive see a complete change in attitude and things get really dark and negative, but here its been upbeat." Defence has been an issue as Montreal has conceded six goals while scoring only twice. They have been lively on attack, leading the league with 57 shot attempts and 20 on target, but aging centreback Matteo Ferrari and converted fullback Hassoun Camera have been overwhelmed at times on counterattacks and set pieces. The Impact are missing centre back Adrian Lopez, who is due to resume practising soon after knee surgery, and the oft-injured Nelson Rivas. They hope to fix their defensive problems against Philadelphia. Montreal is 3-1-1 with 10 goals against the Union scored since joining MLS in 2012. The Union (1-1-1), coming off a 2-1 loss in Columbus, made major off-season changes including the addition of American midfielder Maurice Edu and midfielders Vincent Noguiera and Cristian Maidana. But they also have injury issues on defence, with converted forward Aaron Wheeler now playing in the middle. Impact goalkeeper Troy Perkins said the Union are a puzzle. "With the players they have, especially the new players theyve added, you dont know what youll get," he said. "You dont know if theyll be a high press team or if theyll sit back and counter or if theyll try to play possession. "So you just have to go in and play your game and make them adapt to you." The Impact start the season with three of four games on the road, but after Philadelphia they will be back at Olympic Stadium for their next two against New York and Chicago. Defensive tackle Vince Wilfork made sure the Oakland Raiders stayed out of the end zone in the final minute. An interception by the 325-pound Wilfork near his goal line gave the heavily favoured Patriots the ball with 51 seconds left, and they ran out the clock to hold off the Raiders 16-9 on Sunday. "It was a team play," Wilfork said after his third career interception. "I just happened to catch it." The ball deflected off Logan Ryan after Rob Ninkovich jarred it loose from intended receiver Denarius Moore. On the previous play, Darren McFaddens 6-yard potential tying run into the end zone was nullified by a holding penalty against guard Gabe Jackson. "When I turned around and everybody wasnt coming to celebrate with me, I knew something wasnt right," McFadden said said. Jackson didnt think he held. The penalty gave Oakland first-and-goal from the 12. Then Ryan redeemed himself for a pass interference penalty on the play before McFaddens run. Just as Raiders coach Dennis Allen disagreed with the holding call, the Patriots Bill Belichick questioned the pass interference. In spite of a sluggish offence that settled for three field goals by Stephen Gostkowski and just one touchdown pass from Tom Brady to Rob Gronkowski, the Patriots (2-1) won their home opener for the 12th time in 13 seasons. The Raiders (0-3) lost their 15th straight game in the Eastern time zone. They were held to three field goals by Sebastian Janikowski and finished with no interceptions despite several opportunities. "We are moving in the right direction," Oakland defensive end LaMarr Woodley said. "When we have an opportunity to catch the ball we need to catch it." Brady completed 24 of 37 passes for 234 yards and became the third quarterback with 150 regular-season wins behind Brett Favre (186) and Peyton Manning, who came into Sunday with 169. And Brady is 57-5 in his last 62 home games, including the playoffs, posting another win despite a mediocre offensive performance. "We did just enough to get the victory," Gronkowski said. "Sometimes its frustrating, but what we did today is not always going to get the job done." The Patriots had a chance for another touchdown when they reached the 2-yard line with 8 seconds left in the half. But Dan Connollys snap was low and Brady picked it up and quickly threw an incompletion, stopping the clock with 3 seconds remaining. Gostkowski then kicked a 21-yard field goal. "We have first-and-goal on the 1 1/2-yard line and settle for a field goal," Brady said. "You just cant do that." Derek Carr completed 21 of 34 passes for 174 yards for Oakland. But with running back Maurice Jones-Drew sidelined for the second straight week with a right hand injury, the rookie remained winless as a pro. McFadden started in Jones-Drews spot and rushed for 59 yards on 18 carries. The Patriots relied on their running game early against the NFLs worst rushing defence and picked up 63 yards on the ground in the first half but just 16 the rest of the way. "Sometimes you got to grind them out," Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman said. "An ugly win is better than a pretty loss." The Raiders planned to leave after the game for London, where they face the Miami Dolphins in Wembley Stadium next Sunday. "I was looking forward to it being after a win," Oakland safety Charles Woodson said. "Its a great opportunity to represent the NFL, but its a business trip." NOTES: Patriots defensive tackle Sealver Siliga didnt return after hurting his foot in the first quarter. ... Oakland wide receiver Rod Streater and safety Tyvon Branch each left the game with a broken foot. ... Edelman had 10 catches for 84 yards, extending his streak to nine regular-season games with at least six receptions. ... Janikowskis field goals were from 49, 37 and 47 yards. ' ' '
LONDON, Ont. Stitched Stars Jerseys . -- At the age of 16, Brooke Henderson gets it. The amateur from Smiths Falls, Ont., is well aware of the high expectations that come from finishing in the top 10 at a major tournament and emerging as the best young Canadian womens golfer. "I see the pressure and I hear it," Henderson said. "I hear that Im the face of Canadian golf, but Im just trying to improve and trying to get better." Henderson doesnt seem to be buying into the hype that she has created for herself. With Lorie Kane about to turn 50, shes considered the future of the sport in Canada, even with Alena Sharp, Sue Kim, Jennifer Kirby and Rebecca Lee-Bentham already established on the LPGA Tour. She goes into this weeks Canadian Pacific Womens Open at London Hunt and Country Club with all that perspective to go with her experience. Henderson missed the cut the past two years in Edmonton and Vancouver and understands what its all about this time, playing about a seven-hour drive from where she grew up. "Definitely there is pressure," Henderson said. "But Im excited to be able to play for my family and friends and show them what I can do. Theyre out there cheering for me, and I know every shot theyre going to be happy either way." Henderson set her expectation at making the cut and then "hopefully climb up the leader board a little bit." Thats a realistic goal two weeks after she finished second to Kristen Gillman at the U.S. Womens Amateur. But this is a different animal for Henderson as the home-country girl whos blossoming into a star. On her way from the putting green to the driving range on Wednesday, several fans stopped her for autographs, photos and or just to chat. When she tees off just before 8:30 a.m. for Thursdays first round, Henderson will get to focus in on just golf. Her caddy, longtime family friend Bunk Lee, will do his part to keep Henderson focused. "I think Brooke is very good at relaxing herself," Lee said. "Shes been exposed to this enough, and she takes care of most of it. Im just there for reassurance and making sure Im doing my job as the caddy and trying to provide the best environment for her to perform in and it all takes care of itself." Kane recalled being overwhelmed at times during her first appearances at the Canadian Womens Open -- then called the du Maurier Classic -- worried that she couldnt live up to external expectations. The four-time champion on the LPGA Tour said she has no doubt Henderson is prepared for the atmosphere shes about to face and the future shes embarking on. "Brooke, shes hard-working, very dedicated to what she does," Kane said in a phone interview last week. "Brookes career can be what Brooke wants it to be. The skys the limit. Shes got a great head on her shoulders, shes a very level-headed kid." That came across Wednesday in her pre-tournament news conference during which she fielded a handful of questions about her place in history and the hefty weight on her young shoulders. In the short-term -- the next few days -- Henderson expects to feel more comfortable now that she has gotten to know more professional colleagues and what to expect. In the long term, Henderson doesnt consider herself standing alone as Canadas only hope in womens golf. "Definitely I think the game in Canada is growing, and there are some young pros coming up like Sue Kim, and Jennifer Kirby and Rebecca Lee-Bentham that are great players and have full status on the tour this year," she said. "Maybe they havent played as well as they would have liked, but I think the future is bright for them." It could be even brighter for Henderson if she continues down her developmental path. Golf Canadas Brent McLaughlin said just like with mens golfer Mike Weir, Canadian fans "need to rally around heroes" and considers Henderson one of those. "Were so proud of Brooke. ... Any time you see young talents just excel, youre proud of them," McLaughlin said on a conference call last week. "(Fans) need to have a reason to watch. ... It makes kids want to be like them. We need that in our sport. Weve very fortunate, very lucky and very proud." Henderson is one of 15 Canadians in the field this week, along with pros Kane, Sharp, Lee-Bentham, Kirby, Kim, Maude-Aimee LeBlanc, Sara-Maude Juneau, Samantha Richdale, Nicole Vandermade, Natalie Gleadall, Erica Rivard, Jessica Wallace and fellow amateurs Jennifer Ha and Elizabeth Tong. No Canadian woman has won this tournament since Jocelyne Bourassa captured the title at the inaugural edition in 1973. For 22 years from 1979 through 2000 it was a major, and it still carries that importance to Henderson. "It used to be a major back in the day, and to me it still is one," she said. "Its very close to home. Its our national championship." New Zealands Lydia Ko, at 17 a two-time defending champion at Canadas national championship, knows from experience that Henderson has had to repeatedly answer the question about when shes turning pro. Henderson said Wednesday its still her plan to attend the University of Florida with the hope of having an LPGA Tour career in the future. That means for now Henderson is one of the faces of amateur womens golf, something she has accepted. "Of course there is a little bit of pressure, but I enjoy it," Henderson said. "I love a challenge." Fake Stars Jerseys . Tyutin has missed the last nine games with an ankle injury which occurred while playing for Russia at the Olympics. They ring as true now as they did when Mularkey heard them the first time playing tight end for the Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Fame coach 25 years ago.Jean Beliveau was the most regal of kings. He was also the most important Montreal Canadien in the life of the franchise. Not Maurice Richard. Not Guy Lafleur. Jean Beliveau. When Beliveau ascended to the Habs lineup for good in 1953, the Toronto Maple Leafs reigned as hockeys dominant team with nine Stanley Cups to the Canadiens seven. Seventeen more championships would follow in Beliveaus lifetime. He would win ten as a player including five as captain. He would gain seven more as a club official. No one else in NHL history can approach that level of success. Beliveau, of course, brought the polish to a franchise invigorated by Maurice Richards passion. His countenance on and off the ice, his abundant and obvious decency, his prodigious talent and work ethic infused the organization and positioned the Canadiens as the NHLs gold standard for excellence over four decades. At six-foot-three, Beliveau had every gift that could be bestowed on a hockey player. He was one of a kind, a classic, Hall of Famer Ranger Rod Gilbert once observed. Jean Beliveau was probably the best player ever in the NHL. He was a typical centreman with lanky strides and vision to both sides. You talk about Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Beliveau was as good as them in our time. The best stickhandler of his generation, Beliveau leveraged a small mans skills: agility, imagination, into a package that had not existed before his widely-heralded debut with the Canadiens. He was a giant, Le Gros Bill, a player whose elegance outstripped even his own top-drawer skills. Consider this for a moment. Like Joe DiMaggio, who won nine World Series and is lionized for the way he carried himself, the unquantifiable elements of how Beliveau looked – graceful, confident - dwarfed one of the greatest records in hockey history. The New York Yankees are the dominant personality in baseball because Babe Ruths colorful, reckless genius was followed by DiMaggios seemingly effortless grace. Ruth was a simple man, often a vulgar primitive whose greatness shaped the game into a business. DiMaggio, courted as assiduously by the Yankees as Beliveau was pursued by the Canadiens, gave the Yankees mystique and existed as a counterpoint to the raw emotion delivered by Ruth. The Canadians thrived on a similar dynamic. Richards primal need to score was instantly recognizable in Montreal. Roch Carriers famous tale, The Hockey Sweater, speaks to the desire of Quebec schoolboy to be Maurice Richard. That said, Beliveau became a strikingly attractive role model for another generation of Quebecers who came to see economic success and sophistication as an important element of self-rule. A canny businessman, Beliveau is as said to have earned as much money as Richard while starring for the Quebec Senior Hockey Leagues Quebec Aces. It took a masterstroke from Habs General Manager Frank Selke – he bought the entire league to secure Beliveau - to cut into the young stars bargaining power. Beliveaus personal integrity was inviolate. He was influential in supporting the formation of the NHLs players union in 1967. When the fledgling Quebec Nordiques offered the 39-year-old Beliveau $1 million, (more than he earned in all his seasons with Montreal) for one season on the ice and three more as an executive, he turned them down. Beliveau was coming off a 76-point, 70-game NHL season. That he could no longer compete to his own astronomical standards trumped how easily he would have negotiated the watered-down game in the first days of the WHA. Prime Minister Jean Chretien offered Beliveau the coveted title of Governor General in 1994. Beliveaus family was in the midst of a crisis. He turned the job offer down. I would have been deserting my family, he said. Beliveau withstood the churn of the captaincy in Montreal and he calmly handled the attendant political/media elements. In 1971 when Henri Richard blasted his coach Al MacNeil in the Stanley Cup final, Beliveau squeezed Richards arm as he complained to a reporter about MacNeil. Wholesale Jerseys. The story created a linguistic firestorm but it took merely a touch from Beliveau and Richard did not add another drop of gas through the series. That summer when Beliveau officially retired, the same reporters accorded him a standing ovation. Beliveau was born in Trois-Rivieres and raised in nearby Victoriaville. Life was not easy. Jean, the oldest child, was ten years old when his sister Helene was hit by a car and killed in front of the family home. His father, Arthur, worked for the power company and his mother, Laurette, toiled as a homemaker. He did not play organized hockey until he was 12 but soon scouts were flocking to Victoriaville to see the strapping prospect. One Canadiens operative approached Beliveau on his way home from a baseball game, took him to lunch and laid out $200 in bills to induce him to sign. The boy did not have so much as a dime in his pocket but Arthur mistrusted the standard C form that indentured a player to an organization indefinitely and Beliveau eventually landed in Quebec City. Jean Beliveau brought Victoriaville and his working-class roots with him wherever he went. Nothing comes easily in life, Arthur Beliveau often told his son. Discipline and hard work will make you who you are. I think Ive worked hard all my life and I have always tried to be there whenever the team, the company or my family needed me, Beliveau said. His lifelong maxim was simple enough: give more. When I accept something Ive always said do it right. Take the time. Too often you go to an event, you see athletes or personalities who look at their watch and wonder when it will be over. Maybe one of my secrets is to give the organization or the person more than they were expecting. Those qualities were what his teammates had in mind when they voted him captain in 1961. The move devastated Boom Boom Geoffrion who was coming off a 50-goal season. After a week mulling over his options, Beliveau offered to give the C to Geoffrion but Selke overruled him. I cant tell the players we are going to give it to Geoffrion and not you, Selke said. If Geoffrion isnt happy thats his problem. Always a gentlemanly player, Beliveau tired of being roughhoused by his third season. Hitting people wasnt his nature, said his longtime teammate Bert Olmstead. But I think he realized it was time to stand up and be counted. Beliveau initiated more contact and his penalty minutes surged from 58 the season before to 143 in 1955-56. He scored 47 goals, piled up 88 points and won the first of two Hart Trophies and the Art Ross Trophy. Beliveau had transformed himself into a power forward decades before the term had been coined. He won the brand new Conn Smythe Trophy at 33 years old. He was a first team all-star six times and a four-time runner up for the Hart. Beliveau would finish among the leagues top 10 scorers in 12 of his 15 full seasons. There were, of course, always expectations for more. Beliveaus skill level was so jaw-dropping, a two-goal night would often be characterized as an evening where he should have had three. Its tougher, said Frank Mahovlich who would know something about mile-high expectations. Youre bigger and people are expecting more from you. It wasnt easy for Jean. I played with him and I know, he worked hard in practice and in preparing himself. Beliveau retired in 1971 as the teams all-time leader in playoff points. His 507 goals were second only to Richard. Had Beliveau started with the Canadiens at 20 instead of 22 he could have surpassed the Rockets 544 goals. It would have changed nothing, of course. Beliveau was never about the points. His allure even transcended winning. Few of the obituaries will focus on the hallmark by which everyone else is measured: success. Instead they will speak of decency and dignity and grace, still more categories where Jean Beliveau had no equal and precious few peers. Mike Ulmer is the author of Canadiens Captains. ' ' '

They forced Game 7 after a 3-2 series deficit. The Flyers simply ran out of comebacks. Just as it has in every season since winning it all in 1975, Philadelphia heads home without a Stanley Cup. The New York Rangers eliminated the Flyers with a 2-1 win in Game 7 in the first round on Wednesday, extending their championship drought to 38 seasons, the sixth-longest streak in the NHL. There was one sliver of consolation Thursday when team captain Claude Giroux was selected as a Hart Trophy finalist, the leagues MVP award. Giroux matched a career high with 28 goals and finished third in the NHL scoring race (86 points), helping the Flyers rally from a 3-9-0 start. Hes the fifth Flyer to be a finalist, joining Bobby Clarke, Eric Lindros (who both won), and goalies Pelle Lindbergh and Bernie Parent. Individual award nominations are nice, and this one was sweet for Giroux after Team Canada bypassed him for the Olympics. But they simply dont compare to the thrill of hoisting the Stanley Cup. "We do have to be proud of what we did," Giroux said. "Last place and being able to come back and get everybody back on the same page. We had a lot of fun doing it. But right now, it stings a lot we cant be in the second round." Giroux had his chance in 2010 when the Flyers reached Game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals. But since that tantalizing run, theyve shown few signs of establishing themselves as a perennial contender. As they rallied from the bottom of the East all the way to the playoffs, the Flyers found two key cogs to their future are already in place: Coach Craig Berube and goalie Steve Mason. General manager Paul Holmgren made the right call when he fired Peter Laviolette after an 0-3 start and promoted the coach known as "Chief." After a small adjustment period, he had the Flyers playing as one of the top teams in the conference, leading to a 42-30-10 (94 points) finish. Aaron Jones Super Bowl Jersey. "We were stuck in a hole for a while and they battled out of it," Berube said. "They stuck together and went to a Game 7." Mason, the NHLs rookie of the year in 2008-09, pushed aside the doubts that lingered from Columbus that he could become a No. 1 goalie and blossomed into their goalie of the future. His mix of sensational saves and easygoing personality helped the Flyers start to erase the memories of Ilya Bryzgalov from their consciousness. "This teams a lot of fun to play with and Im looking forward to growing them in the future," Mason said. Giroux, Wayne Simmonds and Jakub Voracek form a nice offensive nucleus. Veteran defenceman Kimmo Timonen may decide to retire, though of the rest of the D was a sore point for the Flyers, especially in the post-season when Mason faced tough shot after tough shot with little break. The Flyers might not have made the playoffs without Mason. They might have beat the Rangers with even a solid defensive effort. "At no given time were we feeling we were out of the series, or out of it this season, for that matter," Mason said. This year, the Flyers celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Broad Street Bullies team that left a lasting mark on the league, but has done nothing to get them closer to holding that third championship parade down Philadelphia. The Flyers havent advanced past the second round since the surprising Stanley Cup finals run in 2010. But a year after missing the playoffs, the Flyers at least stabilized themselves and proved that an addition or two on the blue line can push them deeper into the post-season. "Game 7. Lose 2-1. Cant get closer than that," Giroux said. "For a young team, I think its great. Its only going to make us stronger." ' ' '

"They are three brilliant trades," Nelsen said. "Those players have elevated us as a team to probably a next level. "We might not see that until four or five more games, but I think some of the quality of our play has been very good. You see it in training, see the levels have just got so much better and better." For Nelsen, no matter how good your designated players are — and with striker Jermain Defoe and midfielder Michael Bradley, Toronto has two excellent ones while the verdict is still out on Brazil forward Gilberto — a talented supporting cast is essential. A chock-a-block July schedule should allow Moore, Warner and Oduro to bed in with TFC. Toronto (6-5-3) has played two games already this month and has five more league games and a high-profile friendly with Tottenham left in July. Next up are the 5-10-3 Houston Dynamo, who visit BMO Field on tonight. The two meet again July 19 in Houston. The six points on offer are especially valuable given Toronto, despite having played four fewer games, holds a slim three-point edge over Houston in the Eastern Conference standings. Unlike Toronto, the Dynamo are enjoying a leisurely schedule in July with just four games. But Houston has been suspect on the road with a 1-7-1 record this season, scoring five goals while conceding 20. Thats two more than Toronto has in 14 games home and away. And Houston ranks worst in the league in goals allowed, averaging 1.89 a game. Toronto will likely have to make do Saturday without Bradley, who wanted to play immediately upon his return from the World Cup. Nelsen started the U.S. international last week, moving Bradley farther up the field in a revamped formation. "I look back and regret it," Nelsen said. "I tried to play Michael ahead of Brad (Orr) and Warner, more to save his legs. But after abound five minutes when he picked the ball off the centre-backs and was behind the centre-backs and started players, he just ended up going to what he knows and it kind of got us out of sync. "Too many guys doing very similar jobs. We changed it in the second half and it was more like us." Nelsen replaced Orr with Oduro at halftime and put Jonathan Osorio on for Bradley after 61 minutes. Nelsen kept Bradley out of training this week, allowing him to recover from a variety of niggling injuries and its expected the American star will watch from the sidelines Saturday. Orr will likely start in his place alongside Warner. On the plus side, Gilberto has returned to training from a hip flexor and is eligible for selection. The Brazilian will likely start on the bench with Moore partnering Defoe. "Me and JD, we enjoy playing with each other," said Moore. "We have good understanding on the pitch." The Dynamo have suffered in midfield from an injury to Ricardo Clark (concussion) and the World Cup absences of American Brad Davis and Honduran Boniek Garcia. All three were back ffor last weeks 2-2 draw with the New York Red Bulls, with Davis converting an 82nd-minute penalty to secure the tie. Geronimo Allison Super Bowl Jersey. Houston has not won a league game since a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on May 17. The Dynamo are winless in six since — a 1-5 stretch that has seen them outscored 15-2. "Their position in the table probably doesnt really resemble the quality in their squad," said Nelsen. "I think theyll make a typical Houston run (in the second half of the season). Its when youre in these ruts, how can you get out of them? And theyre in one and they just cant seem to get a win." For Toronto, the game is a chance to put last weeks 2-1 loss to D.C. United behind it. That defeat turned a six-game unbeaten streak into a three-game winless string. "We let one slip against D.C.," said Nelsen. Now is the time to start turning games in hand into points. Moore, Warner and Oduro will play their part in that endeavour. Moore has three goals in seven games since joining Toronto from the Colorado Rapids on May 8 for defender Gale Agbossoumonde. "Hes been brilliant," Nelsen said of Moore. "I thought he was really good in the New York game (a 2-2 tie June 27) but I think hes just got better and better. Now hes playing with Jermain a lot, their understandings really good. And that second half against D.C. (United), nobody could get near those two. They were very good." Moore turned heads at an early age. He made his Premier League debut at 18 with Aston Villa and scored his first Villa hat trick at 19. Moore went on to play for West Bromwich Albion, Derby County, Swansea City and Turkeys Elazigspor before coming to MLS. Captain Steven Caldwell, who played against Moore in England, points to the strikers skills in holding up the ball. "Hes got a lovely touch and brings people into the game. Nice turns. A very elegant player." Added Nelsen: "His feet and vision are fantastic." That works well with Defoe, who uses his speed and vision to separate from defenders. Warner arrived May 16 from the Montreal Impact in exchange for Canadian international midfielder Issey Nakajima-Farran and allocation money. Hes expected to play a key role in midfield, allowing Bradley to move forward as needed. "Hes been absolutely outstanding since hes come here, I think you can see his quality on the park," said Caldwell. "Hes obviously a combative midfielder with passing range and very good feet on him." Warner, a 26-year-old from Denver, now has a home in Toronto, taking over Ryan Richters place after the fullback was loaned to Ottawa Fury FC. Oduro came from Columbus on June 6 in exchange for Spanish midfielder Alvaro Rey. He provides pace on the flank, a scoring threat who can also play up front. Oduro also brings league savvy, having made a combined 235 league and playoff appearances before pulling on a Toronto jersey. NOTES — Rookie centre back Nick Hagglund is suspended after receiving a red card last week. That opens the way for Doneil Henry to move back into the centre of defence alongside Caldwell. ' ' '
LANGFORD, B. ROCKY RIVER, Ohio - Cleveland Indians two-time All-Star closer Chris Perez pleaded no contest and was convicted Tuesday of misdemeanour drug abuse for marijuana shipped to his home in the family dogs name. Detroit Red Wings Gear . Perez withdrew his not guilty plea in Rocky River Municipal Court outside Cleveland and was found guilty and fined $250. He also was placed on probation for one year and was ordered to speak to youngsters about drugs. "Youre highly regarded; kids look up to you," Judge Brian Hagan said. "But you made a big mistake. I hope that through your efforts you can deter someone else from making that same mistake." Postal inspectors tipped off police about suspicious packages mailed to the Perez home. They say Perezs wife, Melanie, accepted two packages with about a third of a pound of marijuana. The related criminal case against her is pending. If she passes a drug test, she will face a $50 fine and will not be required to serve probation, said prosecutor Michael OShea. Authorities say Melanie Perez, whose maiden name is Baum, told the undercover officer delivering the packages that they were intended for her dog, named Brody. The package was addressed to Brody Baum. According to investigators, Perez told drug agents with a search warrant that he had pot for personal use and pointed out two jars. Asked about any drugs or weapons by officers who went to the Perez home, Perez "volunteered to direct the officers to the location of it," an investigative report said. Under the drug agreement between Major League Baseball and its players association, marijuana offences generally result with the player undergoing a treatment program rather than discipline. Perez is participating in the treatment program and is subject to regular drug tests, defence attorney Terry Gilbert told The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer. "For all intents and purposes, his life is on a good track," Gilbert said. The 28-year-old Perez (5-2) has 21 saves on the season in 25 opportunities with a 3.15 ERA. Detroit Red Wings Shirts . Detroit will start the post-season at Dallas next Sunday. The Packers will play the following Sunday. Were 11-5, and its a new season, coach Jim Caldwell said. Weve got to look forward.Detroit lost out on a first-round bye that instead went to the Packers (12-4) with the victory. Rodgers will surely appreciate the rest.Bothered by a lingering left calf injury, Rodgers was carted to the locker room after tossing his first score to Cobb late in the second quarter. He hobbled back on to the field in the third quarter with the game tied at 14. Rodgers led Green Bay on a seven-play, 60-yard drive that ended with a 13-yard score to Cobb with 3:33 left in the quarter. The Packers didnt look back from there. Its clearly an MVP performance — another MVP performance — by Aaron Rodgers, coach Mike McCarthy said. The Packers cashed in with Rodgers 1-yard sneak into the end zone on their next drive.Rodgers felt more pain later in the quarter after Detroits 305-pound defensive tackle, Ndamukong Suh, stumbled back and stepped on Rodgers left ankle while the quarterback was on the ground at the end of a play. There was no penalty, and Rodgers tried to shove Suh back as the defender walked away.Rodgers said referee Walt Anderson told him he thought Suh was blocked into the quarterback. McCarthy didnt see the play, but heard enough from others to very unhappy with Suh.Theres no place for that, McCarthy said. I dont understand it, frankly.Suh had cleared out of the locker room by the time reporters were allowed in after the game. NASCAR chairman Brian France has repeatedly said he wants to place a greater emphasis on winning, and hes never ruled out tinkering with the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship format in an effort to create the "Game 7 moments" he covets. The Charlotte Observer first reported Friday night a possible overhaul to the Chase format that France first introduced in 2004 and has made periodic changes to several times since. Citing anonymous sources, The Observer outlined three major changes beginning with expanding the field from 12 drivers to 16 -- meaning a win during the "regular season" would virtually guarantee a driver a spot in the field. Once the field is set, The Observer said NASCAR is considering eliminations during the 10-race Chase. The field would be cut after the third, sixth and ninth races. The proposed eliminations would drop the lowest four drivers from title contention after the third, sixth and ninth races, leaving four drivers eligible for a "winner-take-all" race in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The four remaining drivers would go into Homestead with their points reset and tied in the standings, The Observer said. A statement from NASCAR chief communications officer Brett Jewkes was non-committal on The Observer report. "NASCAR has begun the process of briefing key industry stakeholders on potential concepts to evolve its NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship format," Jewkes said. "This dialogue is the final phase of a multi-year process that has included the review of extensive fan research, partner and industry feedback and other data-driven insights. NASCAR has no plans to comment further until the stakeholder discussions are complete. We hope to announce any potential changes for the 2014 season to our media and fans very soon." But driver Denny Hamlin posted a series of Tweets on Saturday afternoon that supported the format if NASCAR ultimately moves forward with the changes. NASCAR is expected to officially outline any changes later this month. "This points system change is going to be a really good thing. Trust in it and watch how exciting each chase race is going to be," Hamlin posted. Hamlin also Tweeted that every Chase race will now be as exciting as the September race at Richmond, which is the final race to set the Chase field. He also responded to two fans who criticized the format. One arggued it was "artificially construed excitement" instead of the traditional consistency that NASCAR used for decades in crowning its champion. Bashaud Breeland Super Bowl Jersey. "Consistency will keep you up top," Hamlin replied. Hamlin received support from 2012 Cup champion Brad Keselowski, who replied on Twitter to him that he also liked the reported new format. "Guess we may be in the minority here," Keselowski said. NASCAR has been working feverishly behind the scenes to improve its on-track product, particularly at 1.5-mile tracks, and at least some changes are expected to the points system to meet Frances desire to put a greater emphasis on winning. France was thrilled with the finish of the March race at California, where feuding drivers Hamlin and Joey Logano relentlessly raced for the win. The two ended up wrecking -- Hamlin ended up with a broken bone in his back that sidelined him for more than a month -- and Kyle Busch slid through the carnage for the victory as a furious Tony Stewart nearly came to blows with Logano on pit road. Its that kind of competitiveness, compelling action and drama that France seeks every week. Despite introducing The Chase in 2004, NASCAR has failed to create many of those breathtaking "Game 7" moments in the finale. The debut was successful as Kurt Busch beat Jimmie Johnson for the title by eight points, and five drivers went into the 2005 finale mathematically eligible to win the championship. Then Jimmie Johnson reeled off five consecutive championships, snapped only by Tony Stewarts race-winning, championship-deciding showing in the 2011 finale. Keselowski won easily in 2012 when Johnson was felled by mechanical problems, and it was Johnson, again, in an easy Sunday drive for win No. 6 in November. So a shake up to the system wouldnt be unexpected. But it may not necessarily look like what The Observer reported -- the newspaper was clear the format is only being considered -- because its not unlike NASCAR to float ideas to gauge reaction. For example, NASCAR officials met in October with drivers to discuss an overhaul to qualifying procedures. Among the "potential" changes discussed that day was road course-style qualifying everywhere but Daytona and Talladega. NASCAR said it was considering a 60-minute drafting session for Daytona and Talladega qualifying. In reality, cars will qualify as usual next month at Daytona while NASCAR is now apparently considering three rounds of "knockout style" qualifying -- similar to what Formula One and IndyCar use -- everywhere else but Talladega. PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins have insisted during their extensive front office overhaul that the on-ice product doesnt need to change much for the franchise to return to the NHLs elite. Carolina Hurricanes Gear . Small tweaks, not big ones, are required. Mike Johnstons job is to figure out which ones to make and -- perhaps even more importantly -- how to make them work. The Penguins hired the well-travelled Johnston to replace Dan Bylsma on Wednesday, charging the hockey lifer with creating the right system for stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin to thrive in both the regular season and beyond. Considering the talent at his disposal, the 57-year-old Johnston likes his chances. After spending the last six years with the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League preaching an uptempo attack, Johnston welcomes the opportunity to work with one of the most explosive offences in the NHL. "The core group is exactly where I want it," Johnston said. Good, because theyre not going anywhere. Instead, its everything around Malkin and Crosby -- who earned his second Hart Trophy as the NHLs Most Valuable Player on Tuesday -- that is changing. Johnstons hiring ends a tumultuous six weeks in which the Penguins were bounced from the Eastern Conference semifinals by the New York Rangers after blowing a 3-1 lead, fired Bylsma and general manager Ray Shero, and brought in longtime Carolina Hurricanes executive Jim Rutherford to clean up the mess. Rutherford settled on Johnston after a lengthy interview process that included an ill-fated run at Willie Desjardins, who opted to take the vacant job in Vancouver. Regardless of the path taken, Rutherford is confident he ended up at the right destination. "I feel very strongly that weve got the right coach," Rutherford said. One whose success will depend on his ability to take Pittsburgh on extended playoff runs. Bylsma won more games than any coach in club history but was fired on June 6 after going just 4-5 in post-season series since leading the Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup title. Johnston understands the onus to win on a given night, but stressed the focus will be on preparing Pittsburgh for the challenges of hockey in May and June, not October or November. "The bottom-line expectation for me is that, from training camp through the first part of the season, everything we do is setting the table for the playoffs," Johnston said. "The score is relevant but its not as relevant as the habits that we are going to have to make us successful in the playoffs." Pittsburgh is Johnstons first NHL head coaching job, though he spent two previous stints as an assistant with Vancouver and the Los Angeles Kings. He said he has a bit to learn about the challenges of an 82-game NHL season, which is one of the reasons the Penguins also brought in Rick Tocchet to serve as Johnstons top assistant. Tocchet played 18 years in the NHL, including two seasons in Pittsburgh, where the four-time All-Star helped the Penguins win their second Stanley Cup championship in 1992. The 50-year-old Tocchet also spent more than a season as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2008-10. While Tocchet said that his old team has underachieved in recent springs, he doesnt see that as a stumbling block. "There are teams that wish they had (Pittsburghs) problems," Tocchet said. "The way Mike is going to coach this team, the way these guys play is high tempo. Its something guys are going to enjoy." Tocchet replaces Todd Reirden and Tony Granato, holdovers from Bylsmas staff who were let go on Wednesday. The Penguins retained goaltending coach Mike Bales and video co-ordinator Andy Saucier. Assistant coach Jacques Martin will also remain with the team in an undetermined capacity. Johnston is hardly a novice when it comes to dealing with pressure or highly skilled players. He was a part of Canadas coaching staff at the 1998 Winter Olympics, the first Games in which NHL players were allowed to compete. It led to nearly a decade as an assistant with Vancouver (1999-2006) and the Kings (2006-08) before he landed in Portland, where he spent six years helping young players navigate the choppy waters of professional life. The seas will be only more tumultuous in one of the NHLs most high-profile jobs. Johnston is OK with the pressure. With the 26-year-old Crosby and the 27-year-old Malkin in the midst of their primes, there are worst places to start. "This group wants to win," he said. "Theyve won the Stanley Cup, and I believe they want to do it again." Carolina Hurricanes Store .C. -- Theyll remember the OT from the first Syracuse-Duke game -- and the Ts that decided Round 2. Chris Kunitz scored two goals and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped all 21 shots, leading the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 3-0 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday. Crosby had assists on all three goals for Pittsburgh, which extended its winning streak in the series to eight games. The Penguins also halted the Lightnings bid to tie a club record with an eighth consecutive triumph on home ice. Kunitz opened the scoring seven minutes in, taking a pass from Crosby and lifting it past Tampa Bay goalie Ben Bishop from the left circle. Kunitz sealed the win, scoring into an empty net with 1:43 remaining in the game. Crosbys accomplishment caught the attention of his coach. "It is amazing how often and how fast he has been on that score sheet," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said of Crosby, whose second assist was the 700th point of his career. Crosby, the NHL leader this season with 36 points, appreciates the milestone. "You obviously play to win, but when you get things like that, little individual things, I guess you enjoy it for a little bit," he said. "Its fun to see that, but ultimately you play to win games. Its nice we were able to get a win in the same night." Brandon Sutter scored the second Pittsburgh goal on a power play midway into the third period. Sutter took his own rebound behind the net and banked it off the leg of Lightning defenceman Victor Hedman on the opposite sside. Carolina Hurricanes Shirts. "Its part of the game. It was a really lucky bounce for them and unfortunate for us," Hedman said. "Down one goal and they get a lucky one on the power play, so obviously it sucks a little momentum out of you. ... It could have gone either way. They got the bounces today." Tampa Bay had several excellent scoring chances. Richard Panik got loose in front of the Pittsburgh net just before the second intermission, but was stopped by Fleury, who earlier made a save on Nikita Kucherov on a partial breakaway. "Part of the problem tonight was we let Fleury see shots, not all of them, but too many," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. "And we were really having a tough time getting pucks to the net." The Lightning also came up empty in three man-advantage situations. Bishop, who finished with 26 saves, has lost twice in his past three games. The early goal set the tone for Pittsburgh, which has won all but one of the 15 games in which it scored first. The Penguins are 9-0 when leading after the first period, and Tampa Bay is 0-6 when behind after one. NOTES: Crosby, Kunitz and C Evgeni Malkin each have seven-game point streaks against the Lightning, with a combined 23 goals and 22 assists. ... Pittsburgh broke a tie with Tampa Bay for second place in the Eastern Conference. ... Penguins LW James Neal was held without a point for the first time in six games, having collected 11 on six goals and five assists in his past five outings. ' ' '
BILBAO, Spain -- Athletic Bilbao striker Aritz Aduriz scored goals at the start of each half to help the Basque club beat Malaga 3-0 on Monday, strengthening its hold on Spains final Champions League berth. Lions starting quarterback Travis Lulays recovery from off-season shoulder surgery appears to be on schedule as he takes part in the teams mini-camp. But with off-season signing Steven Jyles absent and his future in question, the Lions are lacking a bona fide backup with CFL experience. Lulay limited the number of throws while only making short passes in drills Tuesday, the second day of a three-day mini-camp for offensive players at the teams Surrey, B.C., training complex. But he was hopeful of being ready for main training camp in June. "Its getting better," said Lulay. "Its been a good couple days to come out and throw the ball around. Obviously, Im still limited, Im still progressing to getting back to where I need to be. But its been a really good measuring stick for this stage of the game." Lulay underwent surgery to repair a damaged labrum suffered in a collision while scoring a touchdown in September. He missed six regular-season games but was able to play in the Western semifinal loss to the Calgary Stampeders. "Im being cognizant of my numbers," he said. "Im just not over-throwing because the biggest thing is, with a shoulder, its such a delicate joint. Over-doing it is one of the worst things you can do. "So Im just understanding that its a progression and just taking steps up the ladder each week. This (camp) is just another part of that. The mobility, the range, is great. Its just continuing to get that end range (i.e. long-pass) and that strength back." General manager Wally Buono said medical reports indicate that Lulay will be ready for the main training camp in Kamloops, B.C., and the quarterback has gone "way beyond the call of duty" in his recovery efforts. "The camp was held at this time for a specific reason," said Buono. " (Part) of it was to make sure Travis could go out and do all the things that hes been doing. Right now, it looks very promising." Jyles, who has seven years of CFL experience but did not play last season because his services were not in demand, was conspicuous by his absence after agreeing to terms with the Lions in April. "Im fine with it," said Buono. "As I intimated before, we were going to bring five quarterbacks to this camp, and one of the things we were going to do was evaluate which quarterback we probably wouldnt invite to the main camp. So this, right now, is just helping our decision." Jyles absence left the Lions with four QBs in the mini-camp. With new offensive co-ordinator Khari Jones beginning to implement his system, this is an important time for quarterback hopefuls to start learning the revised playbook and executing plays in advance of the clubs main June training camp. However, the camp is voluntary for those invited. Jyles, who has three young children, is working in the Dallas area. "I respect the fact that he put his family first," said Buono. "Obviously, (deciding whether to pursue an unguaranteed spot with the Lions) is not an easy decision and, at this point,, he felt it was just best not to leave his job. Dellin Betances Jersey. " Since beginning his CFL career in 2006, Jyles has had two stints with Edmonton and also played for Saskatchewan, Winnipeg and Toronto. With Jyles absent, second-year Lion Chris Hart is the only other quarterback at the camp with CFL experience. NFL veteran John Beck, 32, and Jarrett Lee, who was drafted in 2012 by the San Diego Chargers but did not play in the NFL, are also signed and taking part in the mini-camp. Hart spent most of last season as the clubs fourth quarterback, but feels he has "improved a lot" since he took part in an offensive mini-camp a year ago. "I dont want to say anything (on the backup job)," he said. "I let the coaches do their job and pick who they need to pick. Im just battling for the job and Im going to compete. Im going to work hard like Im No. 1." "Obviously, this is a good test for him, too, because we spent a year with him," said Buono. "Hopefully, hes a lot more comfortable. Hopefully, even though the system is new, the verbiage is easier for him." Beck, a second-round selection of the Miami Dolphins in the 2007, is looking to secure regular employment with the Lions after taking a winding path to B.C. In addition to the Dolphins, he played six seasons with Baltimore, Washington and Houston. The Brigham Young University grad has started seven NFL regular-season games and thrown for 1,417 yards and three touchdowns on 140 completions. Beck spent last season out of football. But instead of pursuing a different career, he spent his time honing his skills while enjoying extra time with his wife and their three sons and hoping for a team to call. "Ive gotta be honest," he said. "Id never really anticipated that my journey would take me to Canada. My journey started in the NFL. I thought thered be some really good opportunities in it for me, and my journey started off in the situation you dont want have it start off on. Go to (Miami) the worst team in the NFL and have everybody get fired. It cant get much worse than that. "But Im very excited that my journey has taken me here. Thats the fun part about it. Im excited for the opportunity thats here." Lee spent five years at Louisiana State, a perennial powerhouse, where he completed 317-of-565 attempts for 3.949 yards and 32 touchdowns. New offensive co-ordinator Jones believes that Lulay is "on track" to being ready to start the season and is not perturbed by Jyles absence. "My job is to coach the guys that are out here," said Jones. "If he shows up, then he shows up." Notes: The Lions were forced to find a new backup after former backup Thomas DeMarco was claimed by Ottawa in the CFL expansion draft, veteran Buck Pierce retired to become an assistant coach with Winnipeg, and Joey Elliott was released after two stints with B.C. last season. a Veteran offensive guard Patrick Kabongo, entering the option year of his contract, is not attending the camp as he works outside of football in Edmonton. BOSTON -- Derek Jeter has gone opposite field so many times in his career that it came as no surprise when his soft liner found Fenway Parks grass along the right-field line. Wholesale Jerseys . Jeter had a key two-run double, Mark Teixeira hit a solo homer and New Yorks bullpen worked 4 1-3 solid innings, leading the Yankees to a 6-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday. Coming into Fenway with its Green Monster looming in left, the Yankees star shortstop even finds himself caught up in the temptation of pulling a pitch despite a large right-field area. "I think its probably the complete opposite because I try to hit the wall and it screws me up for a couple of days," Jeter said, smiling, when asked if Fenways right field fits his swing. "No, I dont think it helps me. I wish it did." Stephen Drew, acquired from the Red Sox on Thursday, added an RBI double as the Yankees won for just the second time in six games. Mike Napoli had a two-run homer for the Red Sox, who won the series opener but have dropped nine of 11. Yoenis Cespedes, acquired from Oakland before Thursdays non-waiver trade deadline for left-hander Jon Lester and outfielder Jonny Gomes, made his Red Sox debut and went 1 for 4 with a single. Shawn Kelley (2-3) pitched 1 1-3 innings of hitless relief for the win and David Robertson got the final three outs for his 28th save. Four Yankees relievers held the Red Sox to one run. Allen Webster (1-1) couldnt overcome his wildness and was pulled after giving up four runs and six walks in 2 2-3 innings. "It was clear he lost command of the strike zone," Boston manager John Farrell said. "While theres plenty of stuff in terms of fastball action, swing and miss to his changeup, the ability to make adjustments -- whether pitch to pitch or hitter to hitter -- was elusive." Trailing 3-0 in the third, the Yankees capitalized on five walks by Webster to score four runs on two hits. Jeter sliced his drive for a double, Carlos Beltran had an RBI single and Jacoby Ellsbury a run-scoring grounder. "When you get the bases loaded with no outs without a hit, you have to take advantage of it," New York manager Joe Girardi said. Teixeiras homer cleared the Green Monster seats to make it 5-3 in the fifth. Drew doubled in the seventh. Boston had taken a 3-0 lead on Napolis homer and Christian Vazquezs RBI single. TRAINERS ROOM Yankees: RHP Michael Pineda is scheduled to throw around 65 pitches Sunday in a rehab outing at Triple A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Beltran hasnt played in the field since July 5 due to a bone spur in his right elbow, and the acquisition of Prado at the deadline means he will likely stay at DH indefinitely. Red Sox: Catcher David Ross was placed on the 15-day disabled list with plantar fasciitis in his right foot. Farrell said outfielder Shane Victorino, on the 15-day DL with a strained lower back, is expected to see an orthopedic surgeon in Los Angeles early this week. Infielder Kelly Johnson is expected to play two rehab games later this week. ON DECK Yankees: Right-hander David Phelps (5-5, 3.89 ERA) is coming off his worst start in over a month when he faces Boston in the series finale Sunday night. Red Sox: Right-hander Clay Buchholz (5-7, 5.87 ERA) looks to rebound from consecutive losses after giving up 11 runs over 11 innings. TRADING PLACES Good friends Johnson and Drew didnt just get swapped for each other. They swapped a uniform number, locker and maybe living places, too. "Its bizarre. After it happened we were texting each other," said Johnson, who now occupies Drews old locker in Bostons clubhouse. "I ended up going over his place, seeing his wife and kids. My family is in town. We played together in Arizona. But we might just make a clean trade, you know, places, numbers, everything." But Drew cant get No. 7 with New York. Its retired and was worn by Mickey Mantle. MENTAL LAPSE Drew wandered off second and was walking toward the dugout when Francisco Cervelli swung and missed. Problem was: it was only the second strike. He was tagged out trying to dive back to second for the final out. Wholesale NFL Jerseys . The Orange lost twice last week after starting the season 25-0, falling at home in overtime against a weak Boston College team before a controversial finish at Duke on Saturday. Florida, riding a 19-game winning streak, received 47 first-place votes and a total of 1,606 points from a nationwide media panel to move up from second, earning the No. 1 ranking for the first time since repeating as national champions in 2007. Wichita State, the only unbeaten team in Division I mens basketball, earned 14 first-place votes to move up to second, while Arizona picked up four top tallies and rose one place to third. Syracuse, the first No. 1 team to lose twice in the same week since Texas in 2010, dropped to fourth and is followed by Kansas, Duke, Louisville, Villanova, Creighton and Saint Louis. North Carolina, SMU and New Mexico are the newcomers, although each had been ranked earlier this season The Tar Heels began the season ranked 12th and had been unranked since early January, but have won nine straight to vault back into the poll. SMU was ranked two weeks ago, earning a spot in the poll for the first time since the 1984-85 season, but fell out last week after a loss to Temple. New Mexico, tied for first in the Mountain West Conference with San Diego State, began the season ranked 23rd and reached 19th before falling out of the rankings in late November. Connecticut, UCLA and Gonzaga dropped out. Gonzaga was 25th and lost twice last week. This weeks two ranked matchups wont take place until Saturday as Louisville visits Memphis and Virginia hosts Syracuse. ' ' '
SAN DIEGO -- The NFL acknowledged that referees erred in not penalizing the San Diego Chargers for an illegal formation on a missed 41-yard field goal attempt by Ryan Succop of the Kansas City Chiefs with 4 seconds left in regulation on Sunday. Dallas Keuchel Jersey . Succop was wide right on the kick, and the Chargers went on to win 27-24 in overtime to claim the AFCs final playoff spot. The Pittsburgh Steelers would have been in the post-season had Kansas City won the game. San Diego lined up with seven men on one side of the snapper, and NFL rules state no more than six players can be on the line of scrimmage on either side of the snapper. The NFL said in a statement Monday that the penalty should have been called by referee Bill Leavys crew, moving the ball 5 yards closer to the end zone and giving Succop another attempt at the game-winning field goal. Succop was 15 of 16 this season from within 40 yards. The NFL did not say whether Leavys crew would be disciplined. "We misaligned on it. Im not going to deny it," Chargers rookie coach Mike McCoy said Monday. "But hey, those calls all balance themselves out over the year. Theyre part of the game. Were all human. ... Things happen for a reason. We didnt do it on purpose, I can tell you that." Chiefs coach Andy Reid actually called his final timeout after the missed field goal and tried to convince the officiating crew of the illegal formation. But because illegal formations are not reviewable, Reid had no other recourse and the play stood. "I called a timeout right there. That was for a reason," Reid said. "I couldnt challenge, all I had was a timeout, so maybe theyd take a peek and read through the timeout and see what took place, but listen, human error. ... Theres not much more you can say." The outcome of the game didnt have any bearing on the Chiefs, who rested most of their starters. Kansas City was already assured of the No. 5 seed in the AFC playoffs and will head to Indianapolis on Saturday for a rematch of a game won two weeks ago by the Colts. The result had significant repercussions for the Chargers and Steelers, though. San Diego (9-7) earned the final AFC playoff spot when Nick Novak kicked a 36-yard field goal in overtime to win the game. The Chargers will visit Cincinnati in the wild-card round Sunday. The Steelers (8-8), meanwhile, would have claimed the playoff spot through a series of tiebreakers had Kansas City won, and Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin even said Monday he knew the Chargers were lined up illegally before the field goal attempt. "What transpired yesterday was unfortunate for our hopes moving forward. Well have to find a way to accept that and move forward," Tomlin said. BIRMINGHAM, England - Striker Christian Benteke scored twice as Aston Villa stormed back from a goal down to beat Norwich 4-1 on Sunday and move away from the Premier League relegation zone. Cheap Avalanche Jerseys . In a meeting of two struggling teams, Wes Hoolan steered the ball home from Gary Hoopers cutback to put the visitors ahead after just three minutes. But Benteke smashed in an equalizer in the 25th minute and then nodded home his second just two minutes later. "Christians first goal set the tone for what was to happen, and his goal was brill," Villa manager Paul Lambert said. "As soon as he scored that goal, his whole game changed, and there is no doubt when he is at it he is an absolute handful." Leandra Bacuna added the third off the base of the post after Gabriel Agbonlahor surged away on the break and Norwichs first-half misery was complete when defender Sebastien Bassong turned Fabian Delphs cross into his own net just before the break. Norwich settled down in the second half, but never looked like turning the game around. While Villa moved seven points clear of the danger, Norwich is four points above the drop zone. "Its a low point at the moment because we came into the game in good form, so this is a real hammer blow," Norwich manager Chris Hughton said. "But you have to assess, and we werent good enough." Colorado Avalanche Store .com) - Coming off a pair of tough losses last week, the Syracuse Orange will try to put an end to their first losing skid of the season when they pay a visit to the Maryland Terrapins at the Comcast Center on Monday night in Atlantic Coast Conference action. https://www.cheapavalanche.com/ . TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie tweeted Monday morning that Callahan - who is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, is now open to a six-year contract at less than $7 million per season.Jim Rutherford didnt expect to fill all the holes on the Pittsburgh Penguins roster in a day. Good thing, because it didnt happen. Not even close. Still, the new general manager isnt panicking despite losing six players in free agency, including defencemen Brooks Orpik and Matt Niskanen, and talented winger Jussi Jokinen. Less than a month into the job, Rutherford is taking a pragmatic approach to replenishing the talent around stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. The process began Tuesday when the Penguins signed defenceman Christian Ehrhoff, forward Blake Comeau and goaltender Thomas Greiss to one-year deals. The team also retained forward Marcel Goc. Hardly the kind of splashy signings made elsewhere -- Washington spent $67.5 million alone to bring in Orpik and Niskanen -- but Rutherford isnt complaining. "We dont necessarily have to have our team all set for a playoff run in September," he said. Ehrhoff came onto the market over the weekend after the Buffalo Sabres bought out the final seven seasons his 10-year contract. The 31-year-old will make $4 million next season in Pittsburgh. The German-born Ehrhoff has 69 goals and 313 points in 692 games, and Rutherford believes Ehrhoffs skill set will fit in well under new coach Mike Johnston. "He plays a lot of minutes, 23-24 a game, can play right or left defence, power play, penalty kill," Rutherford said. "Hes in great shape and a great team guy. He can really skate and with the kind of team we have, having a guy back there that can skate and move the puck is important." Rutherford is confident the young defencemen in Pittsburghs minor league system will give the Penguins a solid blue linne even without Orpik -- the longest-tenured defenceman in team history -- and Niskanen, who cashed in after a career year. Avalanche Jerseys 2021. Still, Rutherford didnt waste a chance to grab Ehrhoff despite the shortness of the deal. "He loved the opportunity to come with the Penguins," Rutherford said. "He just felt that, lets give it a one-year try with a good team and have a chance to win and then well look at it at the end of the season." Comeau provides depth as a third or fourth line forward. The 28-year-old had five goals and 11 assists in 61 games for the Columbus Blue Jackets last season. Greiss, who went 10-8-5 with a 2.29 goals-against average for Phoenix in 2013-14, will compete with Jeff Zatkoff for the backup spot behind Marc-Andre Fleury. The signings give the Penguins depth, but also leave plenty to address going forward, including who is going to play with Malkin after the departure of Jokinen and James Neal. The Penguins traded Neal to Nashville for Patric Hornqvist and Nick Spaling on Friday, and Jokinen left on Tuesday to sign a four-year deal with the Florida Panthers. Hornqvist is a candidate to fill out a top six spot, and the return of Pascal Dupuis from a knee injury and Beau Bennett from a wrist injury should give the Penguins some options. Rutherford didnt rule out a run at free agent forward Nikolai Kulemin -- who happens to be a good friend of Malkins -- but isnt sure the money will work. "Theres always a chance but it would take someone getting very, very creative to figure out how that contract fits into our cap," Rutherford said. ------ AP Sports Writer John Wawrow in Buffalo, NY contributed to this report. FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. Ryan Grant Jersey . -- Atlanta Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon ruptured his Achilles tendon on Tuesday and will miss the 2014 season. Weatherspoon suffered the injury while running under the supervision of the teams medical staff. Weatherspoon had been held out of the organized team activities as he was continuing his recovery from a foot injury that limited him to only seven games in 2013. The loss of Weatherspoon, the teams first-round pick from Missouri in 2010, is a blow to the Falcons, whose disappointing 4-12 finish in 2013 was marked by a string of injuries. Weatherspoon has eight sacks and two interceptions in his first four seasons. Weatherspoon has managed to play a full 16 games in only one season, 2011, when he had 80 tackles and a career-high four sacks. Coach Mike Smith said in a statement released by the team on Tuesday night Weatherspoon is expected to make a full recovery following surgery. "During Seans run today with our medical staff, he suffered an injury," Smith said. "We sent Sean to the doctor for some additional testing and evaluation and unfortunately the results showed that he ruptured his Achilles tendon. "Sean had been working extremely hard to get back on the field, but regrettably he will miss the entire 2014 season. He will have a procedure done in the near future and we expect him to make a full recovery." Weatherspoons 2013 injury forced the Falcons to rely on two undrafted rookies, Joplo Bartu and Paul Worrilow. Worrilow led the team in tackles and Bartu was third. Before Weatherspoons latest injury was disclosed, Smith said Tuesday that Bartu and Worrilow have matured in the off-season. "Two guys who ended up playing a bunch of snaps for us last year have improved and matured," Smith said, referring to Worrilow and Bartu. "If you would have told me at this time last year that one was going to be our leading tackler and the other was going to play 70 per cent of the snaps I would have said I dont think so. "They are a much more mature group. We went through some growing pains with them last year that are going to pay dividends moving forward." The Falcons added four linebackers late in this years NFL draft. Notre Dames Prince Shembo was selected late in the fourth round. Syracuses Marquis Spruill was the teams fifth-round pick. SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Two substitutes, two goals. Avalanche Jerseys China . Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal can, it seems, do no wrong at this World Cup. He sent on replacements Leroy Fer and Memphis Depay in the second half of the match against Chile on Monday and they scored both goals in a 2-0 win that confirmed the Dutch as Group B winners with a maximum nine points. "It is luck," Van Gaal himself said about his super substitutions. "Just luck." But it was more than that. Fer, listed by FIFA as 6 feet 2 inches (188 cm) tall, scored with a header a minute after coming on as a substitute for the 5-foot-6-inch (171 cm) Wesley Sneijder. "I know Leroy Fer is tall compared with our opponents. I know he can head the ball well," Van Gaal said. Then there was Depay. "We analyzed that Chile in the last 15 minutes gives away more room," Van Gaal said. "If you have a creative player in at that moment, you have the chance to use that space." Manchester United, which hired Van Gaal to restore its fortunes after a disastrous season by the clubs lofty standards, must be delighted even if it has to wait a bit longer for him to join them after the World Cup. Chile, one of the most attacking and attractive teams at the World Cup, had no answer at the Itaquerao Stadium, especially not without midfielder Arturo Vidal who watched from the bench. "I played the best team I had," said Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli. Juventus star Vidal had knee surgery before the tournament and had a sore Achilles tendon but said a day before the match he felt fit and ready to play. Both teams had already advanced to the second round, but Chiles first loss of the tournament consigned it to second place in Group B and a meeting with host Brazil in Belo Horizonte. The Dutch next travel to Fortaleza to play Group A runner-up Mexico in the round of 16 on June 29. Chile began with its trademark fast, attacking style while the Dutch, with a five-man defence, looked content to sit back, absorb the pressure and break out with swift counterattacks. "We gave nothing away and fought like lions," stand-in captain Robben said. "Orange lions." The match marked the first time at this World Cup the Netherlands had played in its national colour, but the change of jerseys didnt change its fortunes. Vidals absence deprived Chile of midfield creativity and it struggled to break down the well-drilled Dutch defence. Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez tried to fill the gap left by Vidal, but couldnt find a way through. He came closest to scoring in the second half with a powerful shot that Jasper Cillessen easily blocked at his near post. "Im very proud of this team," Robben said. "If you see how we fought here today. We were right on top of them and gave them no chances." The Netherlands was playing without suspended captain and striker Robin van Persie and was also missing defender Bruno Martins Indi, who suffered a concussion in the teams last match, a tough 3-2 victory over Australia in Porto Alegre. No problem for inspirational coach Van Gaal, who pulled a tactical surprise with his starting lineup -- reverting to the 5-3-2 formation he began with against Spain and posting veteran forward Dirk Kuyt, in his 99th international, at left back. "I enjoyed it," Kuyt said. "I never played in this position but the coach told me a couple of weeks ago that it could be a possibility during the tournament and I told him that I would be ready for it and I was very happy I get the chance. I think it went very well and hopefully I will get another chance." Then came Van Gaals substitutions. Fer headed in powerfully and Depay doubled his World Cup tally in stoppage time. Robben delayed his cross from the left cleverly until the PSV Eindhoven striker arrived at the far post -- also delaying his run by a split second to shrug off his marker -- to tap in an inch-perfect pass. "He is a huge talent and great for the future of Dutch football," Fer said of Depay. Robben said that after three wins out of three, the Dutch squad is hungry for more. "We can enjoy this fantastic performance, but it must not stop here," he said. Colorado Avalanche Pro Shop . On Tuesday, the star questioned whether that was still the case.
